what do the pieces look like that are shed? Posted by MJM [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: No, the pumps failed because of all the debris that>>, Anders, Mon, 7 Jan 2002 20:41:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
On my last oil change I found a crescent-shaped little piece of black plastic in the inlet to the filter. The piece looks like it might have come from the top of a cylinder of about 10mm dia. At the time I had absolutely no idea where it might have come from. I hadn't noticed any new noises or abnormal behavior from the car. After doing some research I decided that it might possibly have come from the oil pressure relief valve/piston, so I ordered a new piston ($30!), spring and gasket. I was surprised to see that the new piston was aluminum, but hoped that the old one might still prove to be phenolic. Alas, no such luck, the old piston was also aluminum, and except for some light scratches from up/down motion, looked fine. I replaced it anyway, but am still looking for the source of the plastic pieces.
Any thoughts? I wouldn't have thought that large pieces could make it through the oil pump.
thanks, Mike
