I have a 1997 saab 900s that had the same problem. I was told by a Saab dealer that I had a sludge build up in my engine and that I needed a new engine $3600. I decided to clean the sludge out on my own and put synthetic oil in. My oil pressure light has not come on since, but I still had a whine in the engine when I first started the car in the morning. I figured that the sound was because the oil was having trouble getting up into the engine. I took it to a mechanic that has worked on Saabs with this problem. He cleaned out the oil pan and screen $282. The car no longer whines. You wouldn't believe the crap that was blocking the screen. No wonder the engine was making such a noise. The placement of the catalitic converter next to the oil pan cooks the oil causing a hard residue to form thus helping to create this problem. It is imperative that you change your oil every 3000 mi. I hope this helps you out.
