I have had 5 Saabs since 1986. I have driven each of them (except for the two I currently have) to almost 200K with no engine problems.
They do, like most cars, have afew problem areas which require attention, but for the most part they are very well built, reliable cars. It sort of depends on how you define reliable too. My Saabs have never left me stuck on the side of the road...but they have had some little problems here and there.
Don't let this BBS skew your vision of Saab...only people with problems post here, few people post about the problems they are not having!
As with any car...if you are unfamiliar with Saabs, get a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) at a Saab dealer or a mechanic experienced with Saabs. It's worth the $75-100 you will pay, and sometimes will find some little items wrong which you can use a leverage to get a lower price.
Many of us here will tell you to avoid the 94-95 V6 engine and stick to Saab's excellent 4cyl turbo or non-turbo.
