There is a thread below a bit called "positive V6 stories?" Read this one for perspective.
The V6 can be fine if it was maintained correctly. Saab fell victim to the "gotta offer a V6 to sell more cars" trend that hit the US auto market in the mid 90's...they dropped the engine after a couple of years. Its now back in the 9-5 as a 3.0L, but I believe this engine uses timing chains.
They seem to be prone to breaking timing belts (4 cyl uses timing CHAIN), if you don't change them religiously every 25-30K. Saab dealers even do it for free, acknowledging the fault.
Some on this board have V6's which they love. I personally think that the 4cyl turbo is a more reliable/bulletproof engine...plus it performs better than the V6 anyway.
The first thing you should do on that 1996 is replace both the plastic idler pulleys on the serpentine belt. That is the single most common problem we see on this board....they sieze and throw the belt.
Its a relatively cheap fix and good piece of mind!!
Hope this helps,
Nick
