I'm not sure exactly WHEN the switch was made to synthetic tranny oil... I thought it was for '98 models. Another data point, a friend with a '97 has the same hex socket that you have... The 6-sided plug denotes the switch to synthetic, so you still have regular 10W30 motor oil in there.
Just beware that the head on the hex socket is easily stripped out (not the threads, the actual hex socket itself since it's only 8MM and it's soft aluminum). Tap the filler plug with a hammer a little first to try and loosen up any bond that has developed. Make SURE the socket is fully engaged with the plug... Use an extension from the top (don't remove the battery in this case). If all else fails, take it to a mechanic to get the plugs loosened for you. They're waaaay too tight from the factory.
