Reverse lights stuck on

I've been working on the most perplexing problem. My reverse lights are stuck on in my '94 900S. If you shut the key off, they turn off. If you pull fuse #31 they turn off. This started as an intermittent problem. They seem to be stuck on permanently now.
I've pulled the connector off of the reverse light switch with no change -- The lights stay on! (I'm pulling the connector off of the spark plug looking switch at the back of the transmission. The wires are Brown/White and White. I'm pretty sure this is the correct switch, it's under the coolant overflow tank.) Both the lights at the rear of the car, and the side marker lights are on. I have no idea why.
Please send any ideas. I found someone with the same problem in the archives, but it seems his lights fixed themselves.
