I just got a call from the service manager. He told me the belt was OK, but the key that holds the pulley that drives the belt sheared off. This brought everything out of alignment. The engine needs to be removed, completely disassembled and rebuilt. It sounded to me that it needs at least a new crank and valves. His rough estimate: $6-7k. He is trying to see, if Saab covers any of this.

I am most upset, because the engine ran fine when I dropped the car off. I demonstrated the noise to the service manager, and told him I was concerned it is a timing belt issue. I paid them to diagnose the problem, and got a wrong or at least incomplete diagnosis, making me believe the car was still driveable (I intended to take it to my local mechanic because he is so much less expensive).

It wasn't until I came to pick the car up that it did not start anymore. It happened at their facility, before the car was handed back over to me. I feel this could have been avoided, had their diagnois been correct.

They paid for one day's rental car, but now I have to pay. I will hear back as soon as they spoke to the Saab representative.
