The Service Manager says this has not gone bad overnight, and because of the loud noise from the water pump they were not able to detect it. He spoke to someone at Saab who offered some financial assistance for fixing the heads/valves - even though they were not damaged because of timing belt failure and therefore are not covered by any warranty. They declined any assistance for the bottom end repaairs, though.

In any case, I'm waiting for a more detailed diagnosis to determine what to do. Today, they did not know if they could replace the key on the crankshaft, or have to replace the whole crankshaft. There is still a possibility that a rebuilt engine might be less costly. We'll have to see...
