In July of 2000 I had a similar problem. One of the cam sprockets on my V6 broke. The belt was intact, the aluminum sprocket on the inside cam on the front head shattered. I was doing ~70 mph on I-84....not pretty. The bottom end was ok but both heads had to be replaced ($1622 ea.).
Saab USA picked up 2/3 of the repair. basically they paid for the parts I paid for labor. My 1995 900SE was out of warranty timewise but only had 48K miles on it. Saab listed it as a "goodwill effort". I think I ended up about $1700 out of pocket.
Write to Stephen Zoeller at Saab USA in Norcross GA. He's the guy who can make decisions on these kind of matters.
I hope this is helpful. Good luck.
