Maybe I can pitch in too:
I have experience with 3 models:
(1) 1983 900s bought in 1990 with 135k for $3k. probably spent about $4k on it in repairs over 10 years. Had to let her go when minivan lady hit me and totaled it with 305k miles on it in 2000!!!! Now that's miles/$$.
(2) 1999 9-5 SE bought brand new. Now has 40k on it. Biggest beef is the sunroof shade rattles and Saab so far REFUSES TO FIX IT even under warranty! It has been rattling since 10k. So, 30k miles later and they still won't fix it. I'm not happy. I paid $36k for this car! Otherwise, the car itself is awesome. I will be looking at ext warr for it though as it has SO MUCH [cool] crap on it I'm afriad it will cost a fortune to keep up. Next new car is Lexus. I never thought I'd go Jap but this sunroof thing is insane.
(3) 1994 900s 5dr bought in 2000 to replace wrecked '83. Bought with 108k on it for $5600 (settlement from wreck just covered it!). 2 years later now has 140k and I have had to spend about $3k on it in repairs so far. Not going as well as the '83. Everything cost about 3x as much to repair as the old '83.

Recommendations: Buy old for little $ and prepare to spend a little time and $ each year for repairs. I'll NEVER buy another new Saab. What good is the warranty if Saab won't back it up. I'll only buy used ones low $$ and high mileage enough to pay cash for b/c the engines will go forever. Frees up money to make repairs. I think GM hurt Saab quality. My old 305k '83 never had tire wear problems and NEVER needed shocks. NEVER. My '94 with all the GM suspension parts is already having tire wear problems that alignment and balancing (which seems never perfect even with new wheels from Saab) aren't fixing. Also, I've stayed with the 4cyl since that's Saab design and I think the V6 is an Opel (GM) knockoff.
Good luck! I love Saabs (but hate Saab Corp).
