Hi Ed.
I posted yesterday an update to my saab woes which are all fixed now. My car really jerked from 0 to 15 mph and made some crunchy sounds in there too, and also a lot of engine movement when torquing the engine, and on and between gear changes.
So many things seemed to go wrong at once, i was worried about the car's future or my ability to fix and/or pay for all the repairs I had dreamed up in my head (mostly paranoia and people on this board were very patient with me and helpful too!).
Well, I can now tell you that the whole slew of problems (for me) boiled down to a bad transmission mount (it was in 2 pieces when I took it out -- explains all the rattle) and a supposedly bad rear engine mount -- it didn't look cracked or worn at all, but i already bought the new part and considered it a precaution nonetheless. Put both new mounts in and INSTANTLY the car was in it's youth again after driving and feeling and sounding like an old old man, it was a teenager again! So if the engine/car jerks at torque or shifting, it is almost certainly a mount somewhere that is bad. You can try to inspect them if you have a pit or if you can really get under the car, but I didn't see anything wrong till I took the mounts out, however all I can say is that if you can lift the engine (only about 2 inches) then the procedure is VERY EASY and very very noticable results -- it makes a HUGE difference.
I never noticed vibration/headlights like you were saying, so I can't say for sure whether you have the same problem...maybe it is a symptom of other mounts being shot, not the ones (rear hydraulic and trannie) that were shot on mine...but hopefully someone else here has heard of that symptom. Just sharing my experience in hope that it sheds some light on your problem.
Tom.
