Ed, I'd be happy to elaborate a bit if I can.
First of all, let me say that all my problems are gone after replacing just the rear engine mount and the transmission mount.

Okay, so the problem felt (past tense) like this:

Stop sign. I stop.
My turn to go, I press the gas, and before I even get to 2nd, say about 10 mph, I'd here a crunchy rattle (ie. AS i am starting to rev from 0 to 1000 rpm)
Then the shift to 2nd would come (automatic), and sometimes, but not always, the car (namely the engine) would jerk when the shift came and as I was still accelerating.

Crunch sound + movement in the engine was bad. Car was scheduled for regular major service at dealership anyway, so I asked them to figure this out. They said,

"yes, we see a lot of movement when we torque the engine, and it looks like the trannie and rear mounts are shot"

So, is that scientific? Not really, but I think whenever things are bouncing around under the hood, that the culprit is likely the mounts, though I do not have a lot of experience, I'm just passing on what I've learned from talking to people. A few people on this board though the problem had to do with retightening the subframe, but uh, no it was definitely the mounts. One of them was in 2 pieces instead of one and the other (the rear motor mount) looked fine and when bench clamped and I moved it around with a wrench it FELT exactly like the new one with no cracked rubber etc, but that isn't a true stress test, maybe it was bad too, but I can't be sure. I still have it if wondering if it is in fact just fine if you want it it's cheap! :) haha.

Tom.
