>(1) I don't own any auto tools but am planning on purchasing some soon. >What is the minimum (I'm broke) that I would need in order to:
>- change oil
>- replace plugs (so on turbo there's no cap, rotor, wires? why not?)
>- replace air filter
>- replace cabin air filter.
For everything except the oil change, a 3/8" socket wrench set (wrench, extension, and sockets) in metric of course (6 point sockets preferred), and a screw driver with interchangable bits (straight, philips, and torx) should do the job. These you can get these at Home Depot or Sears.
Oil changes would require an oil filter wrench, a socket set (see above), oil catch basin, and ramps to make it easier to get under the car. These you can get at Sears or an Auotparts store. Then of course you have to dispoe of the used oil and filter. It maybe cheaper (at leasts short term) to have the oil change done by your mechanic (especially if you go to synthetic oil and 5,000 mile changes).
>(2) isn't it dangerous to switch to synthetic because it could cause my >engine to leak? I've read several threads about this...
If the engine has been well maintained (sounds like it has) and has no serious oil leaks now, then synthetic oil will not cause any more oil leaks. Because synthetic oil flows better, it may increase any current oil leaks. Personally, I ike the extra protection and longer oil change interval of synthetic oil. If there are not any serious oil leaks, I would change to synthetic. My personal choice is Mobil 1 5W-30 or 10W-30 but Redline and Amsoil are good synthetics also. If you do go synthetic, use a schedule like 1500, 3500, then 5000 miles. The first change will remove any sludge that may be in the engine. The second gets any leftovers, and then the third change is for keeps.
>(3) It looks as if my manual transmission oil was changed 5K ago at that >major check up... but not to synthetic. I've read a lot of people talking >about Redline MTL synthetic trans oil as making the clutch feel great. Is >it worth it for me to switch or not really. Bear in mind I'm not a >hardcore car enthusiast, just a regular gal.
Synthetic gear oil is nice but certainly not necessaary. I would leave this for later, maybe when the clutch needs to be done.
By the way, I think it is great that you want to get to know your 'new' car and I am sure that this BB will be glad to help.
