"...been over this many times..."
As the press release for the new 9-3 is less than a week old, I'm not sure if "many times" applies. Also please excuse me if I don't have time to check Saab news on a daily basis.
Yes, the Audi A4 and VW Passat are built on the same platform, and my 900SE includes many GM parts.
But for the new 9-3 to be based on the same platform as the Malibu and the Grand Am is like the A4 being based on the same platform as a Jetta.
As an engineer who used to work in the auto industry, and as an enthusast, I am acutely aware of GM's unfortunate history when it come to sharing platforms across several different domestic product lines. Cars that share the same platform have a lot more in common than you might think. Sure, spring rates, shocks, sway bars, tires, and a host of other things can be changed, but a platform "value engineered" by GM for Chevy and Pontiac has its limits.
It is also my understanding that Ford has yet to go to the same level of "platform sharing" as it appears GM is going to do with Saab.
