So I'm headed down to Pep Boys to buy me up some goodies, as I am basically starting with nothing.
--------- My experience with Pep Boys hasn't been good. I normally get outstanding service from Advance Auto Parts and they usually either have my part or will get in a day. Your experience may vary.
As a safety measure, I want to have an extra serpentine belt and some hoses in back, since I take lots of road trips, in case something breaks, yadda yadda yadda.
- Which brand of serpentine belt? Does it matter? Or should I order online and buy a genuine Saab belt?
--------- Any belt a reputable store has that is listed for your car should be good. I would be more worried about the idler pulleys and have them replaced now or keep them with the new belt. Pulleys are about $80 for both through site sponsors.
- What diameter for the lower and upper radiator hose? What diameter heating hose? I was recommended to buy a few feet of it just in case.
-------- Buy the preformed upper and lower hoses. If the heater hose breaks you can bypass it or clamp it off without hurting anything.
- Where can I find lube for my door hinges, sunroof, etc? What brand? REM recommended Loctite Superlube - will that be available at a store like this?
-------- If you can't find Superlube they should have something simular. If all else fails you can use Spray on white lithium grease for hinges. Any store should carry some of that.
- Bosch Excel wipers? Are they easy to put on? Just want to have some in case I get stuck in a rainstorm and mine break - they're starting to smear, I think.
---------- Easy to install, the instructions in the package aren't great but if you practice once before you really need the blades in a Thunderstorm you should be OK.
- This may sound dumb, but what tools, if any, do I need to open the engine cover?
---------- To get at spark plugs there should be a torx screwdriver that fits it in the trunk. If it's in too bad a shape, take it to Sears and buy a Craftsman brand (no questions asked, immediate replacement warrenty)that size. For the plastic cover over the intake you don't need tools.
- What tools do I need to change the spark plugs? The tools in my spare tire are in pretty dismal shape... don't think anyone used 'em
--------- See above, I recommend you buy a small general purpose tool set to carry in the car. One of the smaller ready made craftsman sets should do.
- And finally, what is everyone's opinion about putting a good bottle jack in my car instead of the emergency jack, and also using it with jack stands for when I change the oil?
--------- Get a small floor jack instead. They can't make it a little harder to get the jackstands in the right place, but the area supporting the car is bigger and they don't tip over as easily.
One last word. If you plan to do your own work much at all, buy the best quality tools, jacks, etc. you can afford. It's better to pay once for something than replacing cheap stuff and remember, SAFETY FIRST!
