The issue I have read about is that the dino oil is absorbed into the rubber over time on a higher mileage engine....article in Popular Science a couple years back. Maybe BS, but I never have had an engine problem on any of my 5 Saabs, 3 of which I drove well over 150K, one over 200K on dino oil every 3K.
Bottom line is clean oil makes the difference in well designed engines. Synthetics may lubricate somewhat better, but is it actually significant to engine life? I'm not yet convinced, but I'm no engineer either.
