I've been using AMSOIL synthetic in Saabs for 25 years now. Most of them have been purchased with about 100,000 miles on them. Have yet to have a problem (at least oil related<g>).
My latest is an 88 9Kturbo, which I bought with 87,000 on it.
I change the filter at 5K, oil and filter at 10K on the turbos. On the non-turbos (which I had for many years), changed the filter at 6 months/12,500 miles and AMSOIL plus filter yearly/25-30,000.
Synthetic oil will virtually stop the wear at the point it is when you put it in. It will give you much better protection in case something goes wrong (like losing coolant or oil). The engine will run cooler, and turn over better in extreme cold. You may get some extra horsepower or better fuel economy.
Your choice! Cost per quart---non-synthetic. Cost per mile--synthetic hands down!
