I remember the holy wars over synth about 6 or 7 years ago, about drying out seals and springing leaks, and I think there was alot of merit to the arguments. But at that time, the full-synth oils did not have any additive packages, whereas even the lowliest Ace Hardware oil had a pretty comprehensive set of extra chemicals in there.
These days, there are additives to condition seals already in the synth, so I think the fear of 'drying them out' is no longer valid. Synth will wash away dino sludge, which may be masking seepage, and that's a very real and legitimate concern on a high-mileage engine. But it's also an advantage to get rid of excessive sludge.
This isn't intended to answer the "to synth or not" question, but the facts have changed a bit since synth arrived. There's less downside. It is still more expensive, even if you take into account the longer drain interval. (But Wal-Mart does have the gallon jug on sale from time to time...)
I changed over on my 95 900SET at 102K, but the choice was easier for me: I live in NYC and I do very short trips and idle for long periods, plus, the car often sits for a long time. This is dino oil hell, but the added stability and non-sludge properties of the Mobil1 eliminate that.
