My opinion is to stay with dino oil in a high mileage car.
Seals within the engine, esp valve guides, absorb dino oil as they age. Dino oil and synthetic do not mix well. Once you switch to synthetic, these dino-oil absorbed seals will now repel the synthetic, lending to nearly unlubricated operation.
Another thing to consider is the increased prone-ness to leaking of synthetics. If you are near a leak now, it will definitely be more prononced with synthetic.
The advantage to synthetic is the longer interval between changes. I see no problem with using dino oil and changing every 3K.
But you know what they say about opinions.
Many on this board have changed to synthetic and not had problems.....YET!!
Nick.
