There is a ball bearing and a spring. There are no issues with the durability of such devices. Your max boost will be 15 PSI, so there is probably no point to getting the more expensive unit. Yes it is simple, it is an adjustble tension check valve running backwards with a bleed orifice. The ball and spring has a cracking pressure which allows air flow only after a certain threashold is reached and the ball creates a pressure drop which would normally be a fixed or adjustable restriction in a bleeder valve unit.
There is no way to overboost the engine. Get the pressure to high and the ECU stops firing the injectors for a brief moment. That causes no harm, but does feel objectionable. A picture would not be of much use, it is kjust an inline device. You want the hose lengths short, but need to keep the hoses away from the hot manifold etc and need to locate the device where yuou can adjust it without getting burned etc.
Do keep your injectors clean and plugs in good order.
