i also have a 95 900s with 152k miles. it used to be my fathers car until a month ago and when he last brought it to the mechanic (a saab specialist in town) he said the timing chain would need to be replaced soon. and he is right. it is starting to "shake" around in the housing making a little more noise then usual. it can be done yourself without pulling the engine out. there is a saab service document on how to do it. i forget thelink but i saw it here in the forums. i think the directions are for a 2.0 but it would be no different with the 2.3.
And regarding the commonness of that problem, i work at a saab dealership and i have seen enough come in to say that it is definetly a defect but why, i don't know.
