Don't give up on the insurance or the car. Unless the car is undriveable, push the insurance to fix it, or give you fair market value including yoru improvements. Be the squeeky wheel, but be polite, the claims adjuster is just some shlub trying to do a job, too, a you may stand out as the only person who was nice to him that day, and he will be inclined to help you instead of some jack @ss. Read your policy to make sure you can have it repaired at a shop of your choice, not the insurance. Here in Illinois, State Farm was recently hammered in court b/c they pressured insured's to get repaired at an "authorized" facility, which of course used inferior parts and substandard work to save the insurance company $.
Most important, read your insurance policy and don't let them double talk you out of the policy's plain language. Good luck.
