This is an e-mail response to a question I sent to Chevron-Texaco.
"
Havoline Synthetic currently is formulated using PAO based synthetic stocks, making them Group IV base oils.
fyi
Group I - conventional paraffinic oil
Group II - low unsaturate, low sulphur oil, typically prepared by severe hydrogenation
Group III - low unsaturate, low sulphur oil with extra high VI, more refined than group II, sometimes called unconventional base oil (UCBO) or very high viscosity index base oil (VHVI), a.k.a. group III synthetic
Group IV - PAO based synthetic
Group V - all other kinds of oil including naphthenic and other non-PAO synthetic based fluids
Recent rulings have decided that the technology and processing of Group III oils achieves similar qualities to PAO synthetics, thus the industry is now permitted to classify Group III oils as synthetic fluids.
