I never claimed to be an authority. But I do what I can to bring forth the issue that 'all synthetic' is misleading and in the minds of some a fraud.
So the suppliers are all falling in line with hydrocracked dyno oil base stocks, when many of them used to supply group IV oils. And the products should be close to 1/2 the prices. Anyone dropping the prices? Any price competition? Nope, they all stick around the price of Mobil One as a price benchmark. So were all these conversions to group III oil motivated by performance? HA! It is not about performance or maximum engine protection, its about money.
Looks like Havoline is doing the same thing. The phone reps just have not caught on. With the oil refiner consolidation and with Chevron part of the family, with Chevron being a major producer and supplier of group III base stocks, its not a surprise. Texico-Chevron-Havoline, all part of the same family now. Check teh http://www.havoline.com web pages. They have a nice 'real' synthetic for Europe. Read the specs. 6% fuel savings too, sounds rather familiar.
Group III aint group IV or V. Will group III 'meet' some performance criteria. Yes. In severe applications will they perform as well?.. nope. There are engines which spec sysnthetic oil, and group III oils are not included.
If someone more informed want to take up these issues when they arise, I will sit back and read.
I push hard on this issue, don't try to read deeper meanings into it.
