However, I would be cautious with synthetic on an engine that could have been fed non-synthetic from the beginning. In my experience, synthetic oil will make existing oil consumption and/or leakage higher. It can also cause old seals to leak. Again, this is from my experience.
I would recommend non-synthetic Mobil 5W-30, which I have found to be excellent. Use 5W-30 in the winter and 10W-40 in summer. The engine will run better with 10W-40 in the summer and fuel economy will be better too. I would not run non-synthetic oil more than 5000 miles/3 months between changes.
However, synthetic 0W-40/5W-40 has tremendous benefits. If you accept the risk of some of your seals leaking, you will definitely see much better performance with a synthetic. Especially in very cold weather. One way to possibly have your cake and eat it too is to use Valvoline MaxLife oil for a while and then change to a synthetic. MaxLife is quality Group II/II+ stock oil with seal swelling additives. People have reported very good results with it. Using MaxLife for a year will, hopefully, wash out all the gunk that has accumulated in the engine and condition your seals to the point where it would be safe to start using synthetic oil. If you use MaxLife, use 5W-30 in winter and 10W-40 in summer.
Mobil 1 0W-40 is the proper oil for SAAB engines, and can be used year around in any climate. In fact, it has been used as factory fill oil in Sweden for several years.
