Ditto Michael P's comments.
I've got 127,000mi on my 1994 900 SE V6. We have had good experiences with the engine overall. Valve cover gaskets have leaked before, were fixed (at home) and the front is now due again. I think I'm going to replace the cover this time.
Engine takes additional work which means extra maintenance expense, but it's relatively straightforward to work on at home. Can't do the timing belt at home without a $350+ propreitary tool (which I do own). All in all, I'm a happy with this engine.
Auto trans is fine and solid, though Anders does have a point about it being a bit sluggish from the line unless you punch it.
