94SE. Two broken exhaust manifold studs busted off at the block face on drivers side exhaust port. Estimate for $700.00 to extract/replace (indy wanted to remove the head and take to a machine shop). Gasket is still OK.
This seems extreme, so I will try something else. Today I will attempt to remove the broken studs with the manifold and the head in place. I will use a right angle drill with 7/32" Cobalt bit and a centering collar (drill stop) and use the hole in the exhaust manifold as a centering device. I will drill 1/4" deep and use a #2 screw extractor.
Question for my fellow posters though...look at your driver's side exhaust port and let me know if you have a rolled spacer (about 3/4" long) on BOTH sides of the manifold attachment. Since mine are both gone, I don't know what was there. The replacement studs (one long, one short) have only one spacer for one side...
I will let you know how this works.
