Well, i'm not sure if they're hard to align, exactly, but what the mechanics said is sort of right. Since the tie rod ends are up so high they can't access them from the top, bottom or through the wheel wells (very well). Also, because the car has to be sitting down to be aligned they can't really jack it up to gain access to the tie rod ends through the wheel wells. I know that when i had my car aligned the guy commented about what a pain in the ass it was. The whole time he was working on it i was watching him wondering exactly how the hell he was going to do it. haha.
That doesn't in any way make up for thier excuses though- if they didn't do a good job they should've told you so and either did it again (and again, and again) until they got it right, or gave you your money back. I'm not sure if you have to take it to a dealer to get it done- just see if you can find a shop that understands what they're in for. And if you want to help them out a bit, make sure to spray some WD or Liquid Wrench all over the tie rod ends (avoiding the ball joint) a couple of days in advance to help them loosen them off easier. It's a tough enough job as it is without having to wrestle with sticky nuts.
