The repair shop called me on Saturday - said that they came back in on the weekend to see what had gone wrong. A bolt from the new tensioner pulley came out and caused the belt to fail, so they are going to take the heads off and replace the bent valves and all that fun stuff. So in the end I will probably end up with a better engine than I took in, new head gaskets, valves and the like. Sounds like they admit they made a mistake and are willing to make good on the repairs and no one has to get nasty over it.
Sometime things can work out just fine. . .
