Hey guys, I have a 1995 900se turbo convertible with a broken top (among other problems) and am having one hell of a hard time getting it fixed. I have been to two dealers in the area and neither have given me an answer that I believe. I visited Smithtown SAAB which I have not been happy with at all, they were able to screw up something as simple as a shift knob and boot install (failure to reattach the reverse lockout)! The service advisor told me that I needed a new toneau motor at a (dealer) price of aproximately $1200. I thought this sounded dubious so I took it back to my own independant mechanic who probably has more experience with SAABs then all of the mechanics at the dealer combined, he hooked up a 12 volt supply to the motor and it both raised and lowered the toneau cover with ease and without any grinding so I doubt that the motor is the problem. He had also replaced several of the microswitches in the top as well as a faulty u-joint in the top at an earlier time and pronounced the entire top mechanism to be in fine health. He would have reprogrammed the top computer as well but does not have the correct tool for the job.
The second dealer I took it to was Arnold SAAB, the mechanics there said that the entire mechanism was out of alignment and twisted up, and said that I needed a host of parts including a new top control computer, and several other parts at a cost of $1700 parts and labor. This sounded very fishy as the mechanic couldn't have looked at it for very long as they were very swamped that day, and there was only on tech working at the time, additionally, the service manager said that the mechanic was able to tell all this simply by looking at the mechanisms in the trunk. At least Arnold didn't charge me for any labor just to look at the mechanism like Smithtown did.
So the question is, has anyone had a convertible properly repaired on Long Island or even in the tri-state area? I really need to have this thing fixed especially with the warm weather we are currently experiencing in the Northeast. With the top up I feel like a fool, especially with my plates to read TPLSTRBO, I'm afraid that if I end up at a light next to a convertible with its top down, the drivers will start to taunt me! (not that I'd blame them) Not to mention I am going stir crazy in my own car when I know the top could be down!
Any info or leads are greatly appreciated, please rescue me from this top over my head!!!
