Bang from exhaust

Hi. Please let me bore you with this quick question. Just recently bought a 900. While driving it this morning to the airport I accellerated at the start of the motorway and nothing happened (previously on a different m'way I was getting 100+ with plenty of power left). Speed stayed at 70mph with foot to the floor. Dropped into 4th and there was a bang and the car took off and power was restored however it now sounds like I have a Ferrari. So I guess I have blown the exhaust or something. Checked it in the car park and there is nothing coming out of the rear muffler and the noise is coming from the front. Having read up on it here I think I have some fromt muffler or connection pipe problem. My question is what caused the bang and should I be worried?. Where does the CAT fit into the picture? I get the impression that I should not mess around with Quick-Fit exhaust repair places. Will they know anything about the cat if there is a problem? Some people recommend the dealer for this job but in Ireland (where I am) you have to bring in 4 pints of blood with you just to get in the door.
Thanks
Ed.
Sorry that rambled on a bit.
