Sorry to beat it to death, but....
I just replaced my idler and did the short belt change tonite on my '96 900SEt w/ 160k miles on it. Seems to be good to go. Thanks to Michel_Mtl for the good walk through. Used an OEM pulley from Eeuroparts and a Kelley Springfield belt from autozone.
The whine of the engine does seem slightly different, but it could be the difference between the old dry pulley and the new grease-dampened one.
MY CONCERN is for longevity of the tensioner. Does anyone know if the newer models that use this config use the same tensioner? It seems that the angle of pull is altered from a nearly vertical direction (long belt) to a more horizontal direction (short belt). The horizontal direction seems to be more in line with the direction of movement in the tensioner. Will this place more force/stress on the tensioner, and cause problems in the long run? Does this make sense? Anybody got more than 10k on a short belt layout? If the tensioner is the same part on the new models, its probably a moot point, but I wonder if it was beefed up or altered to accomodate for this apparent change.
Sorry to ramble, but as a product designer this is the stuff I think about all day long....
One more thing - do clocks run backward in the UK or what? The brit haynes manual said to rotate the tensioner "anti-clockwise" to give slack. Looking at the belt diagram in the manual, the tensioner clearly rotates in a clockwise direction....the engine isn't reversed is it?
