Jesse,
I'm beating this thing to death with you ...
I share your concerns and posted a question earlier about how many miles folks have on their short belt conversions. To date, I have not heard anyone say that the angle of the tensioner is greatly differrent with the short belt than with the long belt. Are you saying you had to compress the tensioner beyond the point where the holes line up to lock it to get the short belt on ? Or that the tentioner is more relaxed with the short belt configuration than the OEM belt ?
The truth for me is I got burned by bogus aftermarket idler pulleys last summer and need to replace them again because they are "way loose". (65Kmi changed them and the belt as preventative maint) The lower (larger) one just wasn't a big problem to change on my car, like everyone says it is, so I could just as easily change the idlers and keep my relatively new OEM belt. Two OEM pulleys are probably more than just the upper idler and a short belt so that was why I was interested in the change. Plus getting one of the idlers out of the picture does have benefits. But since the original stuff went 65Kmi, which is at least 6 years, for me I'm thinking leave well enough alone and stay with the OEM setup. Besides, "bigger fish to fry" right now as the whole reason I'm in on this is I need to change the alternator. I'm hoping to have something newer by 2009 anyway!
