I bought the hookup with about 6-8" of hose, and a quick disconnect fitting similar to what's on an aircompressor. It only fits on the low-pressure, near the battery. It has a twist needle that punctures the can, then you open the valve to release the 134. No guage on the one I got from Walmart. I bought a separate guage, similar to a pen-type tire guage, that came with a thermometer to stick in the dash vents.
I got NO pressure read with the guage, and from Dean's comments it sounded like a system that is totally discharged cannot be easily recharged just by adding refridge. The can said to hold it upside down, the hookup kit said hold it right-side up. I tried both. The can stayed warm and judging by weight and sound is still completely full - other than the small amount that filled up the hose. I'm pretty sure it was seated tightly to the low-pressure valve, but perhaps not?
If there is air in the system, perhaps you have to bleed the high pressure to get that out, while you add freon at the low end? I don't know. It would make sense for something like that to apply - similar to a braking system.
