I have also found out that removing floor mats and really pushing the pedal down into the floor pan usually get the "self ratcheting" system going.
Many drivers only use half of the pedal travel when shifting gears and some have a pile of floor mats that restricts the travel of pedal.
This together stops the ratcheting mechanism from moving up one snap.
When I test drive the car and remove the mats and give the pedal a couple of good pushes, the pedal is rid of some of the freeplay at the end of test drive.
It's still not as good as tugging on the cable method though.
When a shop is replacing the clutch, it's of highest priority that they clean out the bell housing from old friction material and dust, and remove the clutch fork to clean the plastic bushings and apply a dry grease (like silver grease)that doesn't collect dirt right away.
This will keep the clutch and cable going for a longer time.
Some times even the clutch fork needs to be replaced because of wear from contacting throwout bearing.
