Convertible Top Motor Repair Additional Info Request

I have a newly acquired 1996 900S Convertible with a top that needs "the fix". I bought my hose clamps. I loosened the trunk's carpet and found the motor. With a light and mirror I can see a bit of gear visible due to the seperation of motor and transmission (?) when the top is down. So now what? Can anyone advise how to snug up the motor and gear? There was no give whatsoever both when I tried to push them together and when I attempted to wiggle them sideways. Should I seek out a helper to manually jiggle the top around while I try to line things up? I did not find a post addressing this part of the the repair. Thanks in advance. This long time Volvo owner has learned much from this board and its contributers.
