I can't vouch for Saabs yet, but I had the same problem on my last car (admittedly it was a lot more powerful, so the clutch was a monster) and although the failure appeared to be in the release arm, the cause was the clutch wearing out and stiffening up. The release arm wasn't really as strong as it ought to have been, but a new clutch (subsequently better looked after) completely transformed the car.
It seems sometimes clutches get very heavy, and this can put too great a strain on the release system, even thought it ought to be able to take it.
In my case it was well worth the £600 plus that it cost to replace it as it was a dream afterwards. Otherwise I'd have been left with a really stiff clutch and the probability that the release arm would break again. I subsequently did nearly as many miles on the new clutch as the old, and never saw the same problem. It's just one of those things. The mechanic reckoned it's dust buildup on the spring fingers, but I can't believe that myself.
Just my tuppence.
