My car also features an obnoxiously stiff clutch. The cable has been replaced after it broke but it's still way too stiff.
The problem areas are the sliding fit of the throwout bearing on the input shaft to the transmission, the cable and mechanism, and the clutch pressure plate itself.
I've tried 'lubing' the throwout bearing system through the inspection plate, which makes the clutch actuation seem 'slippier', but no less stiff, so I'm assuming that the clutch stiffness is due to the pressure plate.
I can't tell how much friction/drag is imparted by the cable system, but it seems to me that if the cable was a major contributing factor, then the pedal should be hard to push down but easy to let back up (as in the cable would impart stiffness on actuation only, not release).
But my classic 900 never had this problem, and it had a hydraulic clutch, and it's 'only' another 300 bucks, and no more replacing broken cables.
So after the clutch goes in this car, or something breaks, I'm going to put in a hydraulic clutch kit, and a new pressure plate assembly... I can't see how anything else will make a difference. Plus all the other stuff swedecar recommends, I trust his judgement...
I'm currently working on wearing out the clutch disk ;-)
