Unbelievably high speeds achieved?!?!

Pardon my disbelief.
A few days ago, I pushed my completely unmodified 1995 900S (4-cylinder, 2.3 liter, non-turbo, 150 hp, automatic trans) to steady speeds in excess of 135 MPH. Yes, one hundred thirty five miles per hour. I am not bragging, nor do I want a lecture about the safety risks of driving at such a speed. Rather. what I am stunned by is the fact that my Saab is capable of doing this. How does a tiny lil' 4-banger go 135 MPH?! And isn't it supposed to be speed-limited or something? I'm absolutely shocked. Our Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6 with a larger 6-cylinder could barely make it past 85 MPH.
I should also mention that the handling and behavior of my Saab at these absurd speeds was, quite surprisingly, very compliant and controlled. Furthermore, Ms. Saab was continuing to accelerate steadily but I got too scared as we approached 140 MPH.
Perhaps my speedometer is just whacked-out...??? It sure FELT fast!
