I took the volume control potentiometer apart and cleaned the electrical contact surfaces (3 pairs of small metal "fingers" and the surface of a small printed circuit) and it seems to have worked (at least for 5 on/off cycles and 2 car starts). Only time will tell how permanent this fix is.
Dismantling the pot took a little finese but only a pocket knife as far as tools. I did have to bend the "rear" pair of contacts between the pot and the small circuit card (the on/off portion of the control) by about 45 degrees during disassembly and then bend them back during reassembly. I also bent the 3 pairs of contact fingers "up" slightly to make them contact the opposing side with more force. There is a little snap-ring type C-clip inside the pot that lets the control shaft slide out and allows the two halves of the potentiometer be separated. Be careful you don't lose the little ball bearing inside that makes the control click when you turn it.
I would still like to know where to purchase a new volume control. Does anyone know?
