Well, the disassembly and cleaning of the volume control only worked for about a week. Here is the real solution. Buy a new radio!
I worked with Crutchfield and purchased a Clarion XA311 cassette receiver with CD changer controls. I looked at some CD receivers but ended up with the cassette unit because it had the shortest depth requirement into the dash and it had standard C-bus controls for my older model Clarion CDC635 trunk-mounted 6-disc CD changer. The CD receiver units had CeNet CD changer controls and would have been more difficult to connect to my changer, requiring an adaptor not available from Crutchfield. They also threw in the Saab wiring harness and a plastic storage pocket to fill up the extra space above the new receiver. I spent $99.
The installation was EASY. Connecting the Saab wiring harness to the XA311 wiring harness didn't even require the instructions as all the color codes matched;I spent another $1.50 on crimp connectors. I did not use the new DIN mounting sleeve that came with the new unit, I just slid the new receiver into the opening and installed the pocket above it to fill the space. The receiver is really just sitting in there, but it appears mounted and does not seem to be going anywhere with the pocket wedging it in place. The only modification I had to do was to cut a few molded mounting lugs off the top and sides of the plastic pocket filler piece so it would slide all the way into the dash. The pocket was made for a Toyota, but 1 minute with a hacksaw made a fine fit in my Saab.
I recommend this approach to problems with the stock radio. The new one sounds better, looks fine, controls my CD changer, and doesn't forget the CD changer is there every time I disconnect my car's battery.
