John,
I take it from your post that you don't have any leaks at present. As you can see, some are very entrenched in their views that synthetic doesn't cause leaks, but I think that andy b has the best response (see the posts above - I've added link below).
My experience has been that the leaks are usually more of a seep and are cosmetic rather than a major problem. Basically anywhere that can leak may be more prone to this with synthetic. Cost of changing seals etc is not worth it if you're not losing oil and it's only cosmetic.
I personally favour synthetic although I've had five cars of my own develop leaks after switching at mileages varying from over 30K to 85K at the time of change.
In your case, the last two questions can be answered by the condition of your oil when you change it and how often you do so. If it is black and thick, then you've gone too far without changing it. A light colour shows that it is in good condition and if it stays this way between changes, your engine is OK. If you change it frequently, a good quality mineral oil or semi-synthetic will do. Longer intervals would suggest synthetic.
