The so called detailing I've seen at dealers is almost non existent. Some dealers offer detailing services but that is very rare. Most dealers do almost nothing to prep a new car, appearance wise. All they do is wash it, clean the windows, slap on some tire shine, and deliver it. The last 5 new cars I've bought had no more prep than that and I know of no one who actually received a "detail" on their new car.
The stuff dealers use is just cheap bulk products. Each dealer has their own supplier but some large chains may have an exclusive supplier, like Hendrick Automotive has some company in Charlotte supplying all their dealerships with car care products.
A vaseline like substance? That would scare the hell out of me. I have no idea what it is but would not be surprised to discover it was some tire shine or something that made the paint really glossy. Absolutely terrible for paint.
I've detailed dozens of brand new cars and every single one needed some work. I've never seen a new car that I thought looked perfect.
