Years back I applied for a job and met the "executives" at a hotel restaurant for lunch. I later realized that it might have been a scam as they asked my SS # and if I owned my own home (two questions on a credit application - plus they had my whole work history) - they said they wanted to do a criminal background check and were wondering if my commute would be too long and I would have to move to work for them.

Sensing trouble I contacted VISA and Masterdard. they referred me to the Secret Service who took all the info. I set up warnings on the credit rating agencies so no one could take out credit in my name. Never heard a thing, never had a problem.

Three years later the SS calls to follow up on my complaint to close out their file and said it was a ring from the West coast that ran phony interviews here, get the SS# and resume of the people who interview, then they open up credit cards for your "new" address and act as your "new employer" to confirm your salary at your new job on the West Coast. They ran up the credit to the limit but made some payments to buy time, drew down on a cash advance line and then stopped paying. The banks issuing the cards trace to you from the phony resume/credit app and call you at home to tell you that you owe them money.

They would not tell me the results of their investigation, but said I was apparantly the only one of 166 people that answered a want ad and did not fall victim to identity theft. Agent said it was near impossible to trace the perps as it takes so long to find a trend in the information, and by then they move on. This was long before ID theft was in the news as it is today.
