Great info Zeke and correct as far as I recall. T5 was introduced on the 9000 CS series just before it came out on the NG900. I thought all '93 model 9000's had it but it could have been a late year change. I have a vague recollection of that.
T7 was developed of the 9-5 and made its way into the 9-3 in MY2000. These cars got the black DI case. In addition to an uprated coil and oil configuration, the black DI cassettes have different electronics becasue the ion sensing functions had matured on trionic cars. This is why the 2 modules are not compatible.
T5 cars use ion sensing for knock sensing only, while T7 cars used it to also measure cylinder pressure during the downstroke and hence measure torque (proportional to cylinder pressure). The head stage electronics to do this make the two DI cassettes different.
The control strategies changed too at this time. T7 does not limit boost per se unlike T5. T7 will allow whatever boost is necessary (to 19 psi or so) to get the programmed torque values in its chip. T7 chip tuning consists of changing those torque values, rather than boost values. Slightly off topic, but perhaps it helps.
