Enthusiast... not apologist... history helps context Posted by Scott Paterson [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: You Saab apologist, you!, Brian, Fri, 8 Aug 2003 12:00:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well, let's think about what is actually going on here. Yes, in abstract, selling a lot of stuff does not matter in the slightest, but that's completely out of context. I'm no apologist, I'm an enthusiast and TSN is, without apology, a pro-Saab enthusiast site. Someone who is not a Saab enthusiast isn't going to like TSN.
So, back to reality. I was down and out about Saab during the late mid 90's. We had low sales and losses. Let's skip ahead to today. Now we have way way way more sales and the losses are getting lower. We've even had a brief period of break even since 2000. I guess I would say, without apology, that that is progress or at least moving in the right direction. I see very positive signs, but my view is based on watching Saab closely since 1988, not just on a single web news article.
Seriously though, since 1988 we have people on TSN (I have to say many who hadn't been around the community for more than a couple of weeks) stand up and say, "hey, don't you think Saab's going to go out of business soon..." So, you can see why I might sound a little impatient... The sky has been falling ever since 1988 and, really, even before that if you consider the hair pulling that went on regarding the 99 to 900 changes and even before that with Saab putting a Ford engine in one of their cars (you DO know which Saab model I'm talking about, right?).
So, history does mean something and I think history is on Saab's side at this point. There's nothing to apologize for except that I might apologize for being wrong about the 9-3 hatch being more popular than it was and by which I might guess that I'm also wrong about the SUV market too...
I doubt anyone here would be surprised that Saab takes the competition seriously... Saab's model line up has always been narrow. I mean they only had one model during their most profitable years with the Classic 900. They added a 9000 and they had two models for a long time. Now we've got a two sedans, a wagon, and a convertible. I agree. I think we need a smaller sportier car as is coming with the 9-2 too. I miss the hatchback.
Massive incentives is a car industry thing right now, not just Saab. It will be an industry change when it happens probably very closely related to the economy rather than anything else.
