With an Amex card, that was in my wallet, it was used at gas stations and grocery stores _very_ randomly so that I wouldn't notice. It was my corporate Amex and once I realized it I reported it to Amex, got a new card, and never heard about those charges again. Must be common them with gas stations and grocery stores. My guess is that they got your number and created a fake card and slid it thru the devices at the gas stations etc. if you think about gas station and grocery stores you can swipe the card so it never leaves the users possession - if it gets denied they use another card and the store can't confiscate it.
Always keep an eye on your charges. Ever since this incident I ONLY use my Amex card at the gas station since they handled the ordeal so well. Never use those bank cards at the gas station - easiest place to get your number ripped off.
