Do you figure they got your number from the gas station receipts as someone else here suggested? Kinda scary that someone can actually recreate a credit card & get away with it. I work at a police dept & have seen lots of credit card fraud, but not with a fake card being produced. Gas stations are always the FIRST stop for a thief to try out a credit card he or she stole for the reason you mentioned - no contact with a human being. If the card goes through the gas pump okay, their next stop minutes later is usually Walmart or Home Depot (for some reason their 2 top stores of choice.)
American Express is probably a thieves favorite because they have no limit on how much you can rack up on the card (within reason...I doubt they'd let you charge a million bucks) But the type you pay off each month, they never really cap your spending - I must applaud them, though, for keeping a close watch on the charges & with their thousands of customers, still managing to know each person spending habits & when they smell a rat.
