Hi, unfortunately I had an accident with a dog today. I was driving the speed limit, and then a dog darts from behind a parked car. I had literally no time to react and I tried swerving away from the dog, but the front corner of my car hit the dog. It turns out the dog was alright, although it had a broken leg. I actually went with the owners to the hospital to see if the dog was alright. Since the dog is going to be fine, now I'm worried about the damages to my Saab. I hit a pretty big dog, I think it was an adult rotweiller. It broke my right headlight and left a large dent on the side of my car. I feel like the owner is responsible, since the dog was running loose, when it should have been properly restrained. Am I correct about this? I'm kind of worried about this for a few reasons: 1. I don't think the owner realizes she may liable for the damages. 2. She couldn't pay the vet bill which was $400 dollars, so I would assume she wouldn't be able to pay for the damages, which will probably be more than the vet bill. 3. I filed a claim with my insurance claim company, but I had a feeling they would not cover this. So what should I do about this? I feel so bad I hit her dog, but I know it was not my fault and I feel like I should not have to pay for the damages to my Saab.
Thanks,
Dan
