As stated before her homeowners insurance or renters insurance will cover it. If she rents and she's not covered then your stuck. But, if she owns then she has insurance and that will cover it. This holds true no matter where she is at with her dog.
True Story:
I ride mountain bike with a group of friends in a local park. The park has a strict leash law as well as a lot of trails with blind corners. One of my friends was slowing down to take a corner at which point he yelled "Rider Up" to warn (in plenty of time)that we was coming around the corner. Before he finihed saying that a medium sized dog ran around the corner, unteathered and ran went right under his bike. He instantly swerved to miss (just like Dan), but it was too late. The dog was injured and so was my friend who went about twenty feet down the embankment and broke his collar bone. His bike suffered damage too. In the end the women who owned the dog had to pay for all expenses related to the incident as her dog was not on a leash and she was clearly not in control of her dog. Fortunetly we had a report as the police were called in as well as an ambulance. The dog was OK. I'm not sure what happened to it, but it had to wear one of those lamp shade things for a while. I think it's leg was broken... Unlike Dan's situation this women had plenty of money regardless, but my friend said that her homeowner's insurance covered everything.
